Getting There
Leave the boathouse and take the Queensway west. Continue along Highway 17 through Antrim and past Arnprior. At Renfrew, drive past the O‚Brien Street exit. Highway 17 then crosses the Bonnechere River on a bridge. Unfortunately, the railings are too high to see anything. Turn left onto Bruce Street.
Drive west on Bruce Street until the junction of Highway 60 at Stewart Street. Turn right onto Stewart Street and follow the road out of town. The
highway will cross the railroad tracks and then, 1.5 kilometers later, comes to the little hamlet of Rosebank. There will be an intersection, with one road heading right to Haley Station. Keep following Highway 60; the signs will be pointing to Eganville. Two kilometers west of Rosebank, there is a crossroads. From Highway 60, two roads lead off to the right, one at a very acute and one at an obtuse angle. The Bonnechere Road leads to the left (south) at right angles to Highway 60. Turn to the left onto the Bonnechere Road and drive 1 kilometer south to the bridge. Park here and put your canoes in the water.
On the Water
We will go upstream, to the right. The scenery consists of woods and pastures. On the north side of the river (the left side when facing downstream) is an old railroad right-of-way. Some of the trestles still stand. Just downstream of the hamlet of Douglas, the river narrows and becomes swifter. There is a dam and the ruins of an old sawmill. Once you‚ve seen enough, paddle downstream back to the cars.
