How to get to start and finish of trip (Car access):
Take road 17 to Renfrew (Ont). About 8 km past Renfrew, take Hwy 60 to Whitney. Put canoes in water at dam just past Parkway Motel (on the left side of the road) or take Galeary Rd to lake. Park registration is 4,5 km past Whitney
Canoe Route:
Galeary Lake to Rock Lake, Lousia Lake, Florence lake, Frank Lake, Harry Lake, Welcome Lake, Pen Lake, returning to Whitney and Galeary Lake
Comments on Portages:
- Galeary lake to Rock Lake - just a dam, good picnic spot
- Rock Lake to Louisa Lake - 3 km portage: nice, dry and flat, wide, good campsites at Louisa end
- Louisa lake to Florence Lake - NOTE: take portage on the left just after reaching wide logging road. Distance to portage after getting on the road is just a few hundred feet, not as long as shown on the map.
- Welcome Lake to Pen Lake - half of this portage is navigable on fast Galipo creek flowing into Pen Lake
- Portage at North end of Pen Lake: land on left side where logs are for better unloading and easier trail
Comments on Rapids: a few fast creeks, not dangerous
Comments on Campsites (Limitations, General Location): A profusion of excellent sites, especially on Louisa and Pen Lakes.
Points of interest: Nice scenery, especially Louisa Lake.
Description for Trip Schedule: Four day (possibly three day) circular trip in Southern Algonquin Park, from Galeary Lake (Whitney area) to Rock, Louisa, Harry, Welcome and Pen Lakes. Demanding trip owing to long and numerous portages totalling over 6 km. Distance by water approx. 64 km.
