Beginner Tandem
Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Skills Introduction
Objective: Flatwater tandem courses are designed to introduce the inexperienced canoeist to paddling. The emphasis is on mastering the fundamentals of canoeing along with a strong grounding in water safety and safe canoeing practices. This course provides a standard provincial certification of competence for tandem flatwater paddling.
Duration: Two days, plus a pool session. This course will be offered three times:
· Pool session: 12 May 2009; Paddling session: 15-16 May 2010
· Pool session: 9 June; Paddling session: 12-13 June
· Pool session: 7 July; Paddling session: 10-11 July
Cost: $60 course fee, $72 with standard rental. Budget an extra $40 for local transportation and meals.

Beginner Solo
Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Introduction Solo
Objective: The flatwater solo course is designed to introduce the novice or relatively inexperienced canoeist to solo paddling. Many participants have paddled tandem, but not solo. The emphasis is on mastering the fundamentals of canoeing along with a strong grounding in water safety and safe canoeing practices. This course provides a standard provincial certification of competence for solo flatwater paddling. In way of comparison to the Becky Mason courses below, it starts at the same level as Becky’s Basic course, but allows much more time for mastery of strokes. It also reviews essential tripping safety skills.
Duration: 2 days; 19-20 June 2010
Cost: $60 course fee, $84 with rental if required. Budget an extra $30 for local transportation.
Description: This course covers safety, and canoeing skills for solo paddling.
Of interest to: Members interested in moving beyond tandem paddling to going solo.
Prerequisite: Must be a competent tandem stern paddler (Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Introduction Tandem, ORCKA Flatwater Level C or equivalent at the course director’s discretion). This includes tandem skills, such as canoe-over-canoe rescue & confidence in steering. Participants definitely need these skills to take this course.
Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Intermediate
Objective: The flatwater solo course is designed to introduce those who have mastered basic solo boat control to more advanced strokes and precision paddling. Strokes such as the compound reverse, sculling draw, sculling pry, bow jam, low brace turn, Canadian and Indian will be taught. In addition courses such as figure-8 and triangular courses in wind and waves will be covered. The course also includes trip planning, trip leadership and trip rescue procedures.
Duration: 11-12 September 2010

Flatwater Kayaking Introduction
Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Skills Introduction
Objective: An introduction to kayaking.
Duration: One day: 6 June 2010
Cost: $30, $48 with rental. Plan on an extra $20 for lunch and local transportation costs.
Description: This course introduces the novice to paddling in enclosed sheltered waters and calm conditions. Skills covered include a controlled wet exit, forward & turning strokes, assisted re-entry, and the introduction of an Eskimo rescue.Participants will need: bathing suit, change of clothes, wet suit, and boat (The club has 2 kayaks. Once these are taken, participants must arrange their own rental. The club will refund the difference between a commercial rental fee and the club fee.)
Of Interest to: All paddlers wishing to add kayaking to their skills, beginner sea kayakers.
Prerequisites: None
Maximum participants: 10 boats
Objective: Ability to navigate on the water with map and compass.
Duration: One day: 30 May 2010
Cost: $30, $48 with rental. Plan for an extra $40 for lunch and transportation.
Description: This is a basic navigation course for people with basic sea kayak and navigation equipment (sea kayak compass and topo maps) and standard safety equipment at the 1000 islands National Park. 5 boats max.
Note: You must have and carry a passport for this course as you are likely to enter US waters.
Of Interest to: Paddlers interested in in-shore navigation on large bodies of water.
Prerequisites: Ability to sea kayak 25+ km/day in waves up to 1 m.
Objective: learn to enter and exit gentle moving water and avoid obstacles. The sort of skills you may want if you have a river section on a flatwater trip.
Duration: One evening: 9 June 2009.
Cost: $15, $20 with rental.
Description: This clinic will cover basic peel-outs and eddy turns to enter and exit very gentle moving water such as you may encounter on a small river with swifts. Ferrying to avoid obstacles will also be covered. This trip is intended to build comfort with paddling in moving water, but is not in any way a “whitewater” course.
Prerequisite: One year paddling experience or Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Introduction Tandem (can do inside and outside turns and go straight forward and back).
Self-Rescue Clinic
Objective: Recover from a dump or swamping with and without assistance from others.
Duration: One day: 7 August 2010 (8 August rain date)
Cost: $15, $27 with a rental if required.
Description: This clinic is primarily targeted towards flatwater paddlers as it will be done with no current. The clinic will teach self-rescue techniques for tandem canoeists. With two canoes: Canoe-over-canoe rescue with one swamped canoe; Canoe over canoe rescue with both canoes swamped. With one canoe: Righting and emptying a swamped canoe; Re-entry of a canoe after emptying; Paddling a swamped canoe; Swimming with a canoe; Rescue position if righting fails. Participants should bring a lunch and a set or two of dry clothing. You will be in the water a lot so wetsuits and/or paddling jackets are highly recommended.

Instructors Course
Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor Tandem
Objective: Be certified by Paddle Canada to teach Introduction Tandem Lake Canoe.
Duration: Four days: 3-6 June 2010
Cost: $235 or less, depending on enrollment. In addition to the course fee, all participants must register with Paddle Canada as Instructor Candidates through the PC website and pay the $73.50 fee directly to PC prior to the course. ( http://www.paddlingcanada.com/members/course-fees.asp )
Description: This course is designed to allow candidates to reach the required practical skill level to be able to teach beginner tandem lake canoe students as well as to develop teaching skills and techniques.
Prerequisite: Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Intermediate or ORCKA Lakewater/Canadian Style 1 or equivalent at the instructor’s discretion. Candidates should consult "ORCKA Lakewater 1 Core Skills" posted on the Training Programs page.
There will be a screening session prior to the course for those who do not have certificates. In addition, instructors have the right to ask individuals who do not perform technical skills to standard to leave the course while it is underway.
