Whitewater Solo Instructor Course, 26-27 May

Description: to learn to teach people how to paddle a solo boat in white water. Learn what makes an effective demonstration and explanation. Lesson planning, group control, safety issues, teaching/learning styles and understanding what the passing standard for the students is. A large part of this course will involve the participants teaching each other, and providing feedback to each other. Group discussions and problem solving are other key elements. This course is less about your paddling skills, and more focused on pedagogy and ensuring that you can demonstrate what you want your students to achieve. The participants will be continuously evaluated, and successful participants will achieve Paddle Canada's Moving Water Instructor Solo qualification, a nation-wide designation.

Beth Kennedy is an accomplished slalom paddler and previously held the position of head instructor for ORCKA.
Duration: One weekend
Location: Lower Madawaska. Camping at Palmer Rapids.
Cost: $175, $215 including boat rental.
Additional costs: Camping, gas, food. Budget an extra $60. Candidates will be responsible for paying their own Paddle Canada instructor candidate fees directly to Paddle Canada.
Of Interest To: Strong paddlers looking to teach white water canoeing.
Prerequisite: Passed the Padddle Canada Advanced Moving Water Solo Skills (NO EXCEPTIONS, NON-NEGOTIABLE).
All Intermediate Moving Water Instructor candidates are expected to have a high degree of proficiency with Advanced Moving Water Skills, including boat handling, rescue skills, navigation, and weather interpretation.
Organization: All participants will be required to help with planning and logistics such as arranging carpooling, food preparation, signing out club equipment, etc. Participants are responsible for their own personal camping equipment. One participant will be designated the group leader. The leader will be responsible for keeping all participants on schedule for the day, and dealing with any last minute issues that develop during the course.
