I was told that James Store, a family-run, genuine country general store that sells just about everything and has a small cafe is closing--a loss for those who savour rural authenticity!
Permits are now available at North of Seven, a businesss that combines a well-stocked Freshmart grocery and a tidy, bright restaurant that is popular with tourists and local residents. Coming from the east, drive up the hill past James Store and shortly after the crest you'll see the fairly large, new complex of North of Seven on the right. There's a larger paved parking lot and gas pumps beside the building. Permits are sold in the Freshmart, but it's hard to resist following the connecting passage and comforting aroma into the restaurant. North of Seven (or at least the Freshmart) is open until 7 p.m and 9:00 p.m on Friday. The restaurant is probably open later, but the permits are at the grocery checkout. The phone number for North of Seven is 613-479-2603. The phone number at Township of north Frontenac is 613-479-2231.
As of Fall 2005, car permits cost $8 a day and campsites $12 a day for up to 6 campers; 7 and more campers are charged $30 a day for a campsite. There are weekly rates that are more economical. I believe the weekly camping rate is $30.
Also of interest, permits for the north end of Crotch Lake are sold in Ompah at the Double "S" Sports Marina. It's by the water of Palmerston Lake, with boats all about, at the bottom of the hill as you arrive from the east on Hwy 509. Its phone is 613-479-2176. There's a restaurant across the road from the marina that is a bit of a low-maintenace affair, but has that backroads ambience that makes you wonder who will swing through the door next.
